Apps for long-distance couples: what to look for, and how they compare

Updated October 20, 2026. Written by the team behind Buffaly, so we tell you where Buffaly fits and where it does not.

When you live far apart, the hard part is not the big moments. It is the small ones: a quick hello, a shared joke, knowing the other person is thinking of you. Apps for long-distance couples (also searched as apps for long distance couples, couples apps or a long distance relationship app) try to fill that gap. This guide shows the six types that help, what to check before you download, and how to choose.

Why long-distance couples need different apps

Couples who live together get small signals for free: a hug at the door, a note on the fridge, a shared meal. Long-distance couples have to create them on purpose. That is why the best app is rarely the one with the most features. It is the one that makes a small, regular signal easy. That is our opinion, not a study result.

The six types of apps long-distance couples use

Most apps for long-distance couples fall into one of these types. Many couples combine two or three.

1

Shared calendars and countdowns

Good for planning visits and keeping time zones straight. Watch out for apps that feel like a chore list: a calendar helps you plan, but it does not make you feel close.

2

Messaging built for two

Good if regular chat apps feel cluttered by everyone else. Watch out for another app you have to remember to open, and check whether both of you will actually use it.

3

Daily questions and shared journals

Good for conversations that go beyond "how was your day". Watch out for long quizzes you do once and forget. Short and regular beats long and rare.

4

Nudges and shared widgets

Good for the small "thinking of you" signal that long-distance relationships miss most. Check that notifications are quick, and that you can turn them down on busy days.

5

Things to do together online

Good for shared time, like watching something or playing a game together. Watch out for tools that only work when you are both online at the same moment.

6

Location and time zone tools

Good for knowing when your partner is awake and free. Location sharing is personal: check what is shared, with whom, and how to switch it off.

How to choose: a five-question checklist

  • What is missing? Planning, talking, or feeling close? Choose the type that fixes that one thing.
  • Can you both install it? Check iPhone and Android support and the languages offered.
  • What does it cost? Check what is free, how long a trial lasts, the price per month and year, and whether one subscription covers both of you.
  • Does it take under a minute? If it feels like homework, you will stop using it. Time zones make long tasks harder.
  • Is it private? Read the privacy policy, check the App Privacy section on the App Store listing (or Data safety on Google Play) and make sure you can delete your data.

How the main apps compare

Here is how six popular couples apps compare for long-distance use. We make Buffaly, so we list it first and tell you where it is limited. Everything about the other apps comes from each app's own website, checked on October 20, 2026. These are company statements and prices change, so check before you pay.

How to read it: if you mainly need planning, a calendar app like Cupla fits. If you want conversation starters, look at Lovewick, Connected or Amora. If you want a tiny daily signal and a shared goal, that is what Buffaly does. It is not a calendar or a chat app, and it is iPhone only.

Free or paid?

Most apps for long-distance couples are free to download and charge for the rest. A paid plan is worth it only if you will both use it. Try the free part first, and set a reminder before a trial ends so you decide on purpose.

Do these apps actually work?

Early research on couples apps is promising but thin. One example is a pilot study of the app Agapé, reported by the University of Rochester: 405 couples used it for one month and 80% reported improved relationships. The researchers hold shares in the company, and the sample was mostly heterosexual (91%) and in their twenties and thirties (84%).

A couples therapist, Kayla Crane (LMFT), compares apps to vitamins: useful for regular attention and shared language, but not a replacement for therapy. If your relationship is under serious strain, talk to a licensed therapist.

Where Buffaly fits

Buffaly is an iPhone app for couples who are already together. You connect with a 4-character code and share one heart. You log small moments, and the heart fills on both phones. It slowly empties, so small moments every day keep it full.

  • Long-distance: Call, Conversation, Compliment and Little Surprise work from anywhere.
  • Cost: the download is free and your first action is free. Then there is a 7-day free trial, then EUR 4.99 per month or EUR 29.99 per year. One subscription covers both partners.
  • Devices: iPhone with iOS 17 or later, in English and German. There is no Android version yet.

What Buffaly is not: it is not a messaging app or a calendar, and it does not share your location. It is an entertainment tool, not a medical, psychological or counselling service. It is about small, everyday signals.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best apps for long-distance couples?

There is no single best app. Long-distance couples usually need a mix: something for planning (a shared calendar or countdown), something for talking (messaging built for two) and something that makes you feel close in small ways (daily questions or nudges). Pick by what is missing in your relationship, and use the comparison table above.

Are there free apps for long-distance couples?

Yes, most are free to download and charge for extras. Before you commit, check what is free, how long a trial lasts and whether one subscription covers both of you. In Buffaly the download is free and your first action is free, then there is a 7-day free trial, then EUR 4.99 per month or EUR 29.99 per year for both partners.

Which app helps long-distance couples stay connected every day?

Apps that need only a few seconds work best, because they fit into a busy day. Look for daily prompts, quick nudges and widgets. Buffaly is built around small daily moments, like a call, a compliment or a little surprise.

Do apps for long-distance couples actually work?

Early research on couples apps is promising but thin, and much of it comes from people with a stake in the app. Treat an app as a regular prompt to show up for each other, not as a replacement for talking or for therapy.

Is it safe to share my location with my partner in an app?

That is a personal choice. Check what the app shares, with whom and for how long, read its privacy policy, and make sure you can turn sharing off and delete your data. Buffaly does not share your location.
